Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Mr. Ajit Singh paid a maiden call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Humaiun Kobir at the latter’s office this afternoon, where he was warmly welcomed.
The two sides discussed ways Bangladesh and Canada could work together to uphold multilateralism, hoping for high-level engagements on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly. They explored avenues for enhancing bilateral trade, including diversification beyond garments into light engineering and machinery, along with exchange of business delegations.
The State Minister highlighted the contributions of the over 100,000-strong Bangladeshi diaspora in Canada, and thanked Canada for its continued support to the Rohingya response, while the High Commissioner reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to a safe, dignified and voluntary return of the Rohingya to Myanmar.
In the context of Bangladesh’s chairmanship of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, the State Minister sought Canada’s support on climate leadership and climate financing. The High Commissioner also raised the possibility of a framework of cooperation on agriculture, and the two sides exchanged views on energy cooperation.
Both sides reaffirmed that the Bangladesh-Canada relationship continues to be anchored in friendship and mutual trust.
