HSBC Bangladesh, Apparel Impact Institute (Aii), the Embassy of Sweden in Bangladesh and the Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh convened industry leaders and key stakeholders for a high-level roundtable on accelerating Bangladesh’s transition to clean energy and decarbonising its apparel sector.
Under the theme “Advancing Decarbonisation for Apparel in a Changing Energy Landscape,” the discussion explored how greater access to reliable, competitive renewable energy can help Bangladesh’s apparel industry reduce emissions, strengthen energy security and remain competitive as global brands move towards lower-carbon supply chains.
The event, brought together H.E. Michael Miller, Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, A K M Sohel, Additional Secretary & UN Wing Chief, Economic Relations Division (ERD) Ministry of Finance, Government of Bangladesh, Olle Lundin, Chargé d’Affaires, Embassy of Sweden, Md Mahbub ur Rahman, CEO, HSBC Bangladesh; Md. Sarwar Hossain, Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank, Vidya Khan, Vice President, BGMEA; Kristina Elinder Liljas, Aii; Kim Hellström, H&M Group; and Olivia Windham Stewart, ATTI, among other industry stakeholders, including representatives from the wider Team Sweden network.
Aii highlighted Bangladesh’s significant potential to reduce emissions across global apparel supply chains, with USD 6.6 billion in investment required to achieve 50% decarbonisation of the sector by 2030.
The discussion brought together perspectives from the public sector, garments industry, global apparel brands, financial institutions, and development partners, reinforcing the importance of collaboration, innovative financing and private-sector investment in enabling Bangladesh’s clean energy transition.
As global markets increasingly prioritise sustainable sourcing, accelerating access to clean energy will be critical to strengthening Bangladesh’s position as a preferred and competitive global apparel destination.
