পৃথিবীর সকল বাবাকে জানাই আন্তরিক শ্রদ্ধা ও কৃতজ্ঞতা —আপনাদের ত্যাগ, প্রজ্ঞা এবং নিঃশর্ত ভালোবাসার জন্য।

প্রতি বছর জুন মাসের তৃতীয় রোববার বিশ্বব্যাপী ‘পিতৃ দিবস’ বা ‘বাবা দিবস’ পালন করা হয়। তবে অঞ্চলভেদে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন দেশে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন তারিখেও এই দিবস পালিত হয়।

মায়েদের পাশাপাশি বাবারাও যে সন্তানের প্রতি সমানভাবে দায়িত্বশীল, স্নেহশীল ও আত্মত্যাগী—এই উপলব্ধিকে সম্মান জানাতেই পিতৃ দিবস পালনের প্রচলন। পৃথিবীর সব বাবার প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা ও ভালোবাসা প্রকাশের আন্তরিক ইচ্ছা থেকেই এর সূচনা।

ধারণা করা হয়, ১৯০৮ সালের ৫ জুলাই আমেরিকার পশ্চিম ভার্জিনিয়ার ফেয়ারমন্ট শহরের একটি গির্জায় প্রথমবারের মতো পিতৃ দিবস পালিত হয়। পরে ওয়াশিংটনের সনোরা স্মার্ট ডড নামের এক নারীও স্বাধীনভাবে পিতৃ দিবস পালনের ভাবনা নিয়ে এগিয়ে আসেন। ১৯০৯ সালে গির্জায় মা’দের নিয়ে এক আবেগঘন বক্তব্য শুনে তাঁর মনে হয়—বাবাদের জন্যও তো বিশেষ কিছু করা উচিত। তিনি তাঁর বাবাকে অত্যন্ত ভালোবাসতেন। তাই নিজ উদ্যোগে ১৯১০ সালের ১৯ জুন প্রথম আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে পিতৃ দিবস পালন শুরু করেন।

তবে শুরুতে পিতৃ দিবস খুব বেশি জনপ্রিয়তা পায়নি। মা দিবস নিয়ে মানুষের আগ্রহ যতটা ছিল, পিতৃ দিবসে ততটা ছিল না। ধীরে ধীরে পরিস্থিতির পরিবর্তন হয়। ১৯১৩ সালে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের আইনসভায় পিতৃ দিবসকে জাতীয় ছুটির দিন ঘোষণার জন্য বিল উত্থাপন করা হয়। ১৯২৪ সালে তৎকালীন প্রেসিডেন্ট ক্যালভিন কুলিজ এ উদ্যোগকে সমর্থন দেন। অবশেষে ১৯৬৬ সালে প্রেসিডেন্ট লিন্ডন বি. জনসন জুন মাসের তৃতীয় রবিবারকে পিতৃ দিবস হিসেবে আনুষ্ঠানিক স্বীকৃতি দেন।

বর্তমানে বিশ্বের অধিকাংশ দেশেই জুন মাসের তৃতীয় রবিবার পিতৃ দিবস পালিত হয়। বিভিন্ন দেশে দিবসটি নানা আয়োজন ও সংস্কৃতির মাধ্যমে উদযাপিত হয়।

আপাতদৃষ্টিতে অনেকের কাছে মা দিবস বা পিতৃ দিবস খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে নাও হতে পারে। কিন্তু এ ধরনের দিবস আমাদের পারিবারিক ও সামাজিক মূল্যবোধকে স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয়। সন্তানের জীবনে বাবার ভালোবাসা, দায়িত্ব ও আত্মত্যাগ অপরিসীম। ইতিহাসে মুঘল সম্রাট বাবর তাঁর সন্তানের জন্য আত্মত্যাগের এক অনন্য উদাহরণ হয়ে আছেন।

বাবারা সন্তানের সুখের জন্য জীবনের অনেক স্বপ্ন ও আরাম বিসর্জন দেন। পিতৃ দিবস সন্তানদের জন্য সেই ত্যাগের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশের একটি বিশেষ সুযোগ। একই সঙ্গে এটি বাবাদেরও অনুভব করায় যে তাঁদের অবদান পরিবার ও সমাজে যথাযথভাবে মূল্যায়িত হচ্ছে।

পৃথিবীর প্রায় সব ধর্মেই বাবা-মায়ের মর্যাদা সর্বোচ্চ স্থানে অধিষ্ঠিত।

পবিত্র কুরআনে আল্লাহ তাআলা বলেন—

“তোমার রব নির্দেশ দিয়েছেন যে, তোমরা তিনি ছাড়া অন্য কারও ইবাদত করবে না এবং মাতা-পিতার প্রতি সদ্ব্যবহার করবে। তাদের একজন অথবা উভয়েই তোমার জীবদ্দশায় বার্ধক্যে উপনীত হলে তাদেরকে ‘উফ’ পর্যন্ত বলবে না এবং তাদেরকে ধমক দেবে না; বরং তাদের সঙ্গে সম্মানজনকভাবে কথা বলবে।”
— (সূরা বনি ইসরাইল : আয়াত ২৩)

রাসুলুল্লাহ সাল্লাল্লাহু আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম বলেছেন—
“বাবার সন্তুষ্টিতে আল্লাহ সন্তুষ্ট হন এবং বাবার অসন্তুষ্টিতে আল্লাহ অসন্তুষ্ট হন।”

তিনি আরও বলেছেন—
“যে সন্তান অনুগ্রহের দৃষ্টিতে তার বাবা-মায়ের দিকে তাকায়, আল্লাহ তার প্রতিটি দৃষ্টির বিনিময়ে একটি কবুল হজের সওয়াব দান করেন।”

আরও একটি হাদিসে এসেছে—
“ধ্বংস হোক সেই ব্যক্তি, যে তার বাবা-মা উভয়কে অথবা একজনকে বৃদ্ধ অবস্থায় পেল, অথচ তাদের সন্তুষ্টি অর্জনের মাধ্যমে জান্নাতে প্রবেশ করতে পারল না।”

সনাতন হিন্দু ধর্মেও পিতা-মাতার মর্যাদা অত্যন্ত উচ্চে স্থান পেয়েছে। মনুসংহিতায় বলা হয়েছে—

“দশজন উপাধ্যায় অপেক্ষা একজন আচার্যের গৌরব বেশি; একশত আচার্যের অপেক্ষা পিতার গৌরব বেশি এবং সহস্র পিতার অপেক্ষা মাতা অধিক সম্মানার্হ।”

এছাড়াও বলা হয়েছে—
“সন্তান জন্মদান ও লালন-পালনে পিতা-মাতা যে কষ্ট সহ্য করেন, শত জন্মেও সন্তান সেই ঋণ শোধ করতে পারে না।”

পিতৃ দিবস কেবল একটি সামাজিক অনুষ্ঠান নয়; এটি পারিবারিক বন্ধন, নৈতিকতা, মূল্যবোধ ও কৃতজ্ঞতার এক মানবিক স্মারক। আসুন, আমরা আমাদের বাবা-মায়ের যথাযথ মর্যাদা প্রতিষ্ঠায় সচেষ্ট হই। পিতৃ দিবসে এটাই হোক আমাদের অঙ্গীকার।

যাঁদের মা-বাবা ইন্তেকাল করেছেন, তাঁদের জন্য মহান আল্লাহর দরবারে দোয়া করি—

“রাব্বির হামহুমা কামা রাব্বাইয়ানি সাগীরা।”
(সূরা বনি ইসরাইল : আয়াত ২৪)

অর্থঃ “হে আমাদের পালনকর্তা! তাঁদের উভয়ের প্রতি রহম করুন, যেমনিভাবে তাঁরা শৈশবে আমাকে লালন-পালন করেছেন।”

Father’s Day

Today is World Father’s Day — Sunday, 21 June 2026.

On this special day, we pay tribute and respect to all fathers whose love, sacrifice, guidance, and unwavering support shape our lives in countless ways.

Every year, the third Sunday of June is observed around the world as Father’s Day. However, in different regions and countries, the day is celebrated on different dates.

Father’s Day is observed to recognize that fathers, just like mothers, are equally responsible, caring, and devoted to their children. It began from a heartfelt desire to express love, gratitude, and respect for fathers across the world.

It is believed that the first observance of Father’s Day took place on July 5, 1908, at a church in Fairmont, West Virginia, USA. Later, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd from Washington independently came up with the idea of honoring fathers. In 1909, after listening to a sermon praising mothers, she felt that fathers too deserved recognition and appreciation. She loved her father deeply and, through her own initiative, started celebrating Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.

Initially, Father’s Day struggled to gain popularity. People showed far more enthusiasm for Mother’s Day than for Father’s Day. Gradually, however, attitudes began to change. In 1913, a bill was introduced in the United States Congress to declare Father’s Day a national holiday. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge expressed full support for the idea. Finally, in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially proclaimed the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day.

Today, Father’s Day is celebrated in most countries around the world, though customs and traditions may vary from place to place.

At first glance, some may feel that occasions like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day are not particularly important. Yet such observances help remind us of family values, gratitude, and emotional bonds. A father’s love and sacrifice for his children are immeasurable. History itself offers examples, such as Mughal Emperor Babur, who became a symbol of a father’s extraordinary love and sacrifice for his son.

Fathers often sacrifice their own comfort, dreams, and happiness for the well-being of their children. Father’s Day gives children an opportunity to express sincere gratitude from the depths of their hearts. It also reassures fathers that their contributions and sacrifices are valued by both family and society.

Almost every religion in the world places parents in the highest position of honor and respect.

In the Holy Qur’an, Allah says:

“Your Lord has commanded that you worship none but Him, and that you show kindness to your parents. If one or both of them reach old age in your lifetime, do not even say to them ‘uff’ (a word of irritation), nor rebuke them, but speak to them with honor and kindness.”
— (Surah Bani Isra’il / Al-Isra, Verse 23)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

“The pleasure of Allah lies in the pleasure of the father, and the displeasure of Allah lies in the displeasure of the father.”

He also said:

“When a child looks at his parents with mercy and affection, Allah rewards him for every glance with the reward of an accepted Hajj.”

In another Hadith, it is narrated:

“Destroyed is the person who finds one or both of his parents in old age, yet fails to attain Paradise through serving them.”

In Sanatan Hinduism too, parents are given the highest honor. The Manusmriti states:

“Greater than ten instructors is one teacher; greater than a hundred teachers is the father; and greater than a thousand fathers is the mother.”

It is also said that:

“The suffering endured by parents in raising a child can never be repaid, even in hundreds of years or lifetimes.”

Father’s Day is not merely a social occasion; it is a reminder of values, morality, gratitude, and family bonds. Let us pledge to establish the rightful honor and dignity of our parents in our families and society.

And for those whose parents have passed away, let us pray to Almighty Allah:
